Franck Cammas and Thomas Coville in NYC

Thomas Coville is still awaiting a suitable weather window to attempt to beat his own solo Transatlantic record, but he comments enthusiastically on the exploits of Banque Populaire V and Groupama 3.

First of all the skipper of Sodeb'O focuses on the 907 miles covered in 24 hours by Pascal Bidégorry’s crew which, to his mind, “was an unimaginable distance 3 years ago!

For him “this figure in itself speaks volumes and means that we’ve made the switch from yesterday’s sailing to the sailing of tomorrow. These 907 miles demonstrate the excellent work on the part of the designers, hydrodynamicists, yards and the command of the men who helm these boats.

Thomas Coville, whose standby in New York is scheduled until mid August, is awaiting a weather window which is favourable for solo configuration. The perfect scenario for him would be to set off ahead of a low in winds not exceeding 20 to 25 knots (Force 5 to 6), which effectively means the weather system would be moving at about the same speed that he is able to drive his trimaran single-handed.

This scenario enables you to remain ahead of the front and make headway on flat seas, which is something the crewed multihulls pulled off to perfection. Indeed, thanks to their superior speed - 30 to 40 knots – they were able to precede a weather system which was ideal for them, but moving too quickly for a single-handed sailor.
